Zhuwei : The Boundless House
Yang Shih-Yi
Bamboo was not only the primary building material for early settlers but was also planted to form natural barricades against wind and sand—a practice from which the place name "Zhuwei" (Bamboo Enclosure) originated. Beyond a mere geographic marker, "Zhuwei" embodies the wisdom of ancestors who harnessed natural resources to meet environmental challenges. It represents a way of life where the need for survival and defense did not necessitate ecological destruction, illustrating a harmonious equilibrium between humanity and nature.
While these traditional structures and landscapes have gradually vanished from the coastline with the passage of time, the philosophy of living with nature persists through the name itself. In this work, I utilize bamboo elements to construct a series of houses and enclosures, forming a highly porous structure that dissolves into the horizon. This skeletal volume interacts with the sky and ocean, capturing the ever-changing flux of clouds and light throughout the day.
The installation features integrated seating spaces, inviting visitors to inhabit the work and engage in an interactive pause. Within these "Bamboo Enclosures," one is encouraged to feel the pulse of the ocean and the radiance of the sky, reflecting upon the most profound ways we might coexist with our natural environment in the contemporary age.
