The Song of Waves
Sapud Kacaw
The work adopts natural bamboo and employs the resilience of traditional bamboo weaving to recreate the grand curves of the surging sea. Its smooth organic form echoes the “pillar-free curved surface” of the Yong'an Conch Cultural Park, symbolizing a profound dialogue between waves and land, architecture and nature.
The “song” imagery is transformed into an auditory feast through public co-creation. Bamboo bells, handcrafted by the participants, are suspended from the installation. Each bamboo bell carries the viewers’ wishes and memories. As sea breezes gently blows, the bamboo bells strike against one another, releasing warm rhythmic sounds like nature itself performing melodies.
This is not only a static installation but also a flowing space. Through the interplay of light and shadow filtered by the gaps in the bamboo weaving, together with the crisp resonance of the wind, the work invites the public to step inside and collectively compose “The Song of Waves” that belongs to the coast in the interweaving of sight, sound, and touch.
