Breathing Harbor

Réka Szabó

Breathing Harbor is a site-specific, wind-responsive installation that explores the relationship between human presence and the coastal environment. The work consists of two suspended forms inspired by the shape of lungs, symbolizing both human breathing and the “breathing” of the landscape.

The structure is built from a welded steel frame, covered with overlapping bamboo elements. These bamboo pieces are attached in a flexible way, allowing them to open and close with the wind, similar to a roof-like skin. The inner surfaces remain partially open, increasing sensitivity to airflow. As a result, the entire installation responds continuously to environmental conditions.

The two forms are suspended from a minimal, three-meter-high wooden T-shaped frame, stabilized with steel cables. This creates a structure that is never static, but constantly moving with a slow, rhythmic motion — like breathing. In this work, wind becomes the primary sculptural force, transforming invisible atmospheric phenomena into a visible and experiential presence.
