Sea of Island

Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) USR Project Team for Irrigation Canals and Ponds

Sea of Island is sited on the beach alongside the ocean-viewing pavilion of Taoyuan Xinwu Green Corridor. Responding to the existing behaviors of gazing out to sea and lingering by the shore, the work extends a constructed field where visitors may sit, rest, and face the horizon. Bundles of steel rebar are woven together to form a self-supporting vault, integrated with seating functions so that the structure itself becomes a space to lean against and inhabit. Unlike a conventional pavilion, its open, porous form allows wind and light to pass freely through, shaping a perceptual experience of dwelling alongside the coast. The roof is composed of reclaimed fishing net bonded with epoxy resin into a semi-transparent shell, through which light and shadow shift and drift with the texture of the net and the projections of planted vegetation. Sea breezes are guided and dispersed through the apertures. Salt-tolerant plants are embedded at the structural nodes, allowing the site to grow and change over time. Drawing on the living rhythms of stone weir fishing — its cycles of waiting and exchange — the work transforms these into spatial experience, shifting sea-gazing from an act of looking into one of staying and feeling.

Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) USR Project Team for Irrigation Canals and Ponds

Our team is composed of interdisciplinary faculty, students, and international partners from Chung Yuan Christian University, bringing together expertise in architecture, design, and culture. We have long been engaged in research and practice centered on the water culture landscapes of Taoyuan's irrigation ponds and canal systems. Working through the core model of "one pond, one school, one community," the team connects residents, public agencies, and local organizations to collectively advance cultural preservation, environmental education, and sustainable urban-rural development. Through fieldwork and spatial observation, local knowledge is translated into picture books, guided tour materials, and digital educational resources, while teaching practice cultivates students' capacity for action and public engagement. Serving as a collaborative platform for local transformation, the initiative also fosters international exchange and cross-disciplinary cooperation, establishing a model of practice that is both locally rooted and globally oriented. The team's work has been recognized with the Grand Prize in the Local Inclusion category of the 2025 CommonWealth Magazine USR Award and the 2026 Global Views Magazine USR University Citizenship Award, establishing it as a significant case study in Taiwan's water culture preservation and sustainability education.
