Flying Palanquin, Through Golden Fire
Yuan-Hong Luo
The ritual of “Flying Palanquin, Through Golden Fire” at Fuhai Temple in Zhuwei, an intangible cultural heritage designated by Taoyuan City, is a representative folk tradition of the Zhuwei area. Using the “flying palanquin” as the creative prototype, the work focuses on depicting the unique postures of the divine palanquin as it spins swiftly and sways dramatically in midair, propelled by the strength of its carriers when the deity descends or conveys divine will. The imagery of surrounding flames corresponds to the act of the palanquin leading devotees through blazing charcoal, symbolizing the sun upon the earth and dispersing impure energy with heated righteousness.
The installation transforms the “spinning” imagery of the flying palanquin into the stylistic lexicon of contemporary public art, translating the moment when the carrier’s body, pulled, tilted, and extended in spinning, into a rotatable three-dimensional structure. Through successive curved lines and shifts of balance, it presents the forward dynamics of speed, strength, and brightness, turning the important folk act and physical experience of Zhuwei, Taoyuan into a dynamic sculpture in the landscape space. The meanings of blessing, guardianship, and brightness can therefore be continuously perceived and conveyed.
