Empty Harbor

Liang Lai-Chang

The artwork is conceptualized from human-made engineering structures on the coast. Through forms of porosity, light transmission, and wind motion, it transforms originally defensive and enclosed structures into a new coastal interface capable of interacting, breathing, and exchanging with the environment. These openings are not merely aesthetic variations; they signify that wind, light, moisture, salinity, time, and organisms can slowly enter, providing space for various life forms to rest, adhere, and co-exist.

Located at Zhuwei Fish Harbor, the site is a place where artificial facilities and marine ecosystems have long intersected. It bears the history of human utilization and resistance against the ocean, while remaining constantly influenced and changed by tides, sea winds, and the ecological environment. The artwork seeks to reconsider the relationship between humans and the sea. When infrastructure stops merely blocking and controlling nature, and instead allows the environment to participate, leave traces, and evolve, the coast can become a place where humans and ecology co-exist and evolve together.
