Chǎng — TV Taiji

Kun-Han, Ho

Chǎng is an installation that integrates moving images with the natural environment. Two sets of slatted screens float upon the water's surface, displaying images of hand movements from Tai Chi practice. The work transforms the surrounding wind and water into sparring partners, initiating a dialogue between the imagery and the natural environment that transcends the boundary between the virtual and the physical.

The movement of the screens, on one hand, follows the motions of the video; on the other, it is constantly drifted by the pull of the sea breeze. In the tug-of-war between mechanical power and external natural forces, the Tai Chi philosophy—originally belonging to the human body—is transformed into a "TV Taiji," a continuous struggle and balance between machine, image, and environment.
