Dreamland Migration
Yen-Ming Chen
The creative theme of “Migration on the Dreamland,” based on the ethnic migratory history in Guanyin District, reflects the journeys undertaken by different groups as they moved in response to livelihood, environment, and destiny with the passage of time. Through the gentle form full of childlike poetry, the work attempts to soothe collective memories of migratory hardships and transform them into an imagination of hope and ideal settlement.
The overall form is composed of the imagery of a kite dancing with migratory birds, symbolizing the routes of migration and the direction of life’s flow. The kite’s tail, extended and winding like a river, depicts the traces of migration across the sky. Along the path, migratory birds and egrets fly in scattered patterns, symbolizing companionship, encounters, and separation during the journey. The kite’s body adopts a large hollowed design, incorporating cultural totems and symbols of local ethnic groups as an emblem of integration and coexistence.
The kite carries cultural meanings of entrustment, warding off misfortune, and freedom, echoing the life cycles of migratory birds with the changing seasons. Through the interweaving of the kite and flying birds in the same sky, the work presents the relationship between people and nature, migration and belonging, pointing toward the hope of a “dreamland” where future generations may find permanent settlement.
