Wandering through an Algal Reef Fortress
Lin Shuen Long
Set on the Guantang Beach in Guanyin, Taoyuan, Wandering through an Algal Reef Fortress is a response to the area’s precious algal reef ecosystem and the development-related issues it confronts. With its structure made with bamboo and wrapped in burlap and its surface texture rendered with natural materials such as beach sand, glutinous rice flour, lime, sugar, and linen velvet, the work appears as an organic landscape rising gently from the beach.

Founded in 2002, Dada Creative has long been dedicated to public art, environmental/land art, and interdisciplinary artistic practice. The creative director Lin Shuen-Long is an active artist in the French, Taiwanese and Japanese art scenes. Lin graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts and studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His painting Hymn to Paris was selected for and exhibited in the Paris Salon of Spring held in the Grand Palais. Following its philosophy of “imbuing art into the environment,” Dada Creative employs diverse media including bamboo, metal, light, shadow and other natural elements to foreground connections between artworks and ecology, local culture, and humanism, creating spatial experiences which are artistic and characterized by public engagement. Their works are seen across Taiwan and have extended to international platforms such as the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field and the Setouchi Triennale, where they offer profound responses to local culture and environmental issues. Dada Creative believes: only through deep cultivation of land and understanding about the environment can art truly resonate with people and inspire new imagination for cities and nature.
