Tidal Atlas
Peppercorns Interactive Media Art
The Yong’an coastline is characterized by its intertidal zones and tide pools—micro-ecosystems that operate independently while sharing the collective rhythm of the sea. Tidal Atlas reinterprets this natural phenomenon by transforming the two circular observation towers of the tourist fish market into a pair of “Digital Tide Pools.” While the left and right towers function as distinct spatial entities, they are synchronized by real-time tidal data, pulsating in harmony with the ocean’s breath. The central segment remains untouched, acting as a symbolic reef that separates the two pools.
When visitors enter the interactive zone, they engage with the work through digital fishing floats—casting lines with gestures, waiting for a bite, and catching local species such as silver pomfret, narrow-barred Spanish mackerel, and neritic squid.
At the same time, Tidal Atlas responds to the traditional fishing wisdom of “beach seining” and “stone weirs” within Yong’an’s Ocean Hakka culture. By transforming the act of viewing into an act of involvement, the work shifts the relationship between people and the sea from representation toward co-construction.

Peppercorns Interactive Media Art: Symbiosis of Algorithm and Perception
Founded in 2016, Peppercorns Interactive Media Art is dedicated to exploring the symbiotic relationship between algorithmic computation and human perception in the media age. The team treats code as contemporary ink and data as a primary driver, developing a unique "Computational Aesthetics" that manifests through light-and-shadow narratives and immersive spatial experiences. By operating at the intersection of the virtual and the physical, Peppercorns Interactive Media Art constructs perceptual realms characterized by both poetic resonance and humanistic warmth.
Composed of experts spanning the technical and artistic domains, the collective engages in continuous experimentation between rational logic and emotional abstraction. They view technology not merely as a tool, but as a medium for connection. Their practice encompasses light installations, kinetic systems, and real-time generative interaction, focusing on the dynamic interplay between people, space, and data.
Over the years, Peppercorns’ creative practice has gained international recognition, with works exhibited at prestigious platforms such as Ars Electronica, SIGGRAPH Asia, Signal Festival, and the International Arte Laguna Prize. Awarded the SIGGRAPH Asia XR Prize, the team continues to iterate through a rigorous technical foundation and a refined aesthetic vision, articulating a distinct Taiwanese media art vocabulary on the global stage.
