Conch Blowing in the Tides

Eleng Luluan

The work’s imagery originates from the “sea farming” practices of the Marine Hakka community in Taoyuan. Integrating the Hakka spirit of mutual help with ocean culture, the practices of blowing a conch shell, pulling beach seines, and tidal fishing methods present the wisdom of coexistence of people and the sea. Centered on the perception of waves, the work explores the long-standing relationship co-constructed between the human body and climate rhythms. Tides are not only natural phenomenon but also physical experiences across geography and history. In the changes of wind direction, humidity, currents, and sounds, the human body learns to listen, wait, and collaborate.

The spiral structure of a conch shell symbolizes the traces of time accumulating the returning in the ocean. The outer wrapping of the fishing net suggests the long-term entanglement between people and the environment. Scale fragments sewn into the interwoven gaps of the fishing net, reflecting the flow of light, extend the space to multiple layers of perception. Through its form, materials, and the intervention of light, the work recalls physical perception obscured by modern rhythms, allowing viewers to perceive that their existence is also drawn by tides and climate. Between tides, before sound arises, people and the ocean have responded to one another.
