Woven Stones, Roots of the Sea, Embrace of the Sea

Sugihara Nobuyuki

I create stone installation near the Driftwood Park, on the beach and in the forest, that evoke the landscape of the Xinyu Stone weir— traditional fishing structures that extend from the sea into the forest.

This artwork is connected to the stone weir made by the Pingpu people. I also incorporate expressions that “weave” stones by combining them with Taiwan’s traditional sanhé-tǔ and seashells.

Through research into Taoyuan’s stone culture—such as the “Three Grains of Stone” associated with the Land God—and by participating in the stone weir maintenance activities of the Taoyuan Stone Tidal Weirs Association, I learn the stone-stacking techniques preserved by the community and through ongoing exchange with the community, the work is envisioned to continue growing and evolving over time. The meaning of this work emerges through its connection to the landscape of the stone weirs, which appear only at low tide. It is a work that exists as a landscape that changes with the waves.
