Embrace Little Terns

Pasulange Druluan

In midsummer, the little tern, a Class II protected species, flies across the ocean from the Southern Hemisphere and arrives at the gravel peach of Zhuwei Fishing Harbor in Taoyuan to rest and breed. Little terns are found along coastlines worldwide. Taiwan, situated at a key point on their Asian migratory route, has long served as a stable breeding ground. They nest collectively, watching over one another. Humans, by enclosing habitats and guiding protection, safeguard the fragile and precious breeding environment together.

The work centers on the imagery of an adult bird embracing three chicks. Bamboo strips, woven layer by layer, shape the wings of the great bird, while black tubing outlines the iconic plumage. The chicks, woven from straw ropes, embody the softness of texture and convey the warmth and hope of new life. The overall design not only symbolizes parental protection and the continuity of life but also suggests the possibility of coexistence between humanity and nature. Viewers are invited, in their walking and pausing, to feel the quiet but steadfast strength and to cherish the head-won bond with ecology, so that the little tern will return safely year after year and its life will continue endlessly with the sea breeze.
